St. Mary's High School, established in 1933, was originally located in downtown Hagerstown. In 1955, the school, then consisting of faculty, staff and 118 students was moved to its current location and was dedicated under a new name.
St. Maria Goretti High School was named after a young Italian girl, Maria Goretti, who was murdered in order to protect her purity. She asked for forgiveness for her assassin to a visiting priest just before her death, and later she was said to have appeared to her accuser in a dream in which she personally granted him forgiveness and an armful of white lilies as a peace offering. Maria Goretti led a very ordinary life. But in spite of her simplicity, her great faith and love for God made her truly extraordinary.
Through the years, additions and revisions were made to the original buildings to meet increasing enrollment. The gymnatorium was built in 1965 and in 1995, renovations were made which increased the number of classrooms and offices.
The campus, located in northern Hagerstown, is composed of the school, gymnatorium building, the Patti Schetrompf Media Library Center, Perpetual Adoration Chapel, and athletic fields. The main school building houses all classrooms, science and lab, offices, faculty rooms and cafeteria. The art and music rooms are located at the rear of the gymnatorium. The athletic fields provide accommodations for soccer, baseball and softball. There are many more athletic activities offered such as tennis, basketball, and golf. St. Ann's Church, located adjacent to the school campus, provides an appropriate setting for school liturgies.
