School Closings & Delays
Dear Parents and Guardians:

As a college preparatory high school, St. Maria Goretti places a strong emphasis upon reading in its curriculum. Our students are encouraged to read widely in the disciplines throughout their four years of preparation for their diploma. We have consistently found that students who read on a regular basis do better in their academic studies and on standardized tests such as the SAT and Advanced Placement Examinations.

It is our expectation that all Goretti students will devote time to reading during the summer months. Such an endeavor will definitely help them to be more successful when their regular classes begin in the Fall. With your support and encouragement, we are requiring all students to read a minimum of three books this summer. The first two books listed per grade are designated for the book reports. Students are not required to write a book report on the third book which is for Religious Studies, but they will have a test on the book after it is discussed in class early in the school year. Specific information for each grade is included in this packet.

The mathematics teachers will be evaluating the book reports for the ninth graders. The science teachers are in charge of the tenth grade reading. The social studies teachers will be evaluating the book reports of the eleventh graders. The English teachers are in charge of the twelfth graders.

Most of the required books are available at local public libraries, as well as amazon.com and various on-line book retailers. The Patti Schetrompf Library of St. Maria Goretti High School will also retain several copies of each book. Should you wish to check out a book during the summer, please call the school number at extension 133 to leave a message and arrange a time for check-out. We hope that everyone has a relaxing summer that provides opportunities to read and explore in ways that are usually not possible during the regular school year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Kathleen Lilly
Library/Media Coordinator

"Read for a Lifetime"

Have you ever become lost in a book? You can travel back or forward in time, to another country, to another world. You can accompany knights to war during the Middle Ages or travel with time travelers to the future. You can go to the early 1800’s in a Jane Austen novel and learn about the social manners of that era. You can go to the Old West with Wyatt Earp and other men and women of that time. You can go wherever your imagination can take you in a book. Summer is the perfect time to read because you have more free time then than at any other time of the year. Explore other times and places or stay in the early 21st century and read about teens just like you and your friends.

Why should you read in the summer? Have you thought that reading is good for you? It is, in many ways. You will be learning the whole time that you are reading. You will learn new vocabulary and how to spell the new words; you will understand what you read better; your writing style will improve; your use of grammar will improve! Those who know more read more. Reading gives you knowledge of your culture.
