The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. NHS serves to challenge students further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
The Saint Maria Goretti chapter of the NHS holds various fundraisers, including the "Pink Flamingo" event, where pink flamingo lawn ornaments are secretly planted in the yards of Goretti family and friends. Those who are "pinked" pay a fee to have them removed, and donations for removal go to the Vikram Kodali Scholarship Fund benefitting needy Goretti students. Close to $1000 was collected at the last event. Another popular fundraising activity includes the Bowl-a-thon, held at Long Meadow Bowl. Donations for the bowl-a-thon (totaling over $2200 in 2005) benefited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
National Honor Society students serve as guides for Open House and Meet the Teacher night. They host Senior Recognition Night and serve as ushers at graduation.
